Massive and hideous, with a strangely ridged head, the Black Beast resembled a demon in body, but a rather unique one at that, I can say as someone who is rather an expert on them, first hand knowledge and all that.
An animal’s reverse jointed legs, a strange pointed tail and something on it’s back that resembled wings at first glance, but then could be seen to be bone spikes. The creature could unleash a devastating roar, sonic waves blasting over us, bursting ear drums and impacting like a thousand kobolds pummeling every inch of our bodies. Try as I might, my blade would not pierce his defenses.

Continuation of the Tale, told by Ganelon the Scarred, of Three Against Ironfang Keep...
I have found a place, known to a select few adventurers over the years, where time is gentle on one. A place where the weight of the world and the burden of ones past seems distant. Not quite of this world, not quite of the next. It is known as the Inn Between the Worlds. When I am there it is as if I feel that peace I did when I was dead, before I was brought back into the world. At ease, rather than in a place where fate has no path for me to take, because my story is long past it’s ending. Long hours I have spent there, or perhaps it is days, or weeks it isn’t always possible to tell.

nother knock at the door- this time clearer and full of meaning. Kivis sat up from his work and sighed - "Coming, coming" he muttered under his breath as he approached the door "keep your boots on will ya ?". Kivis removed his reading glasses - and as he reached the door, he went through the ritual of affixing more suitable glasses atop his nose, squinted at the door, and slowly opened it enough to see who it was that was knocking at this time of night.
"Are you Kivis Wintershinn ?" asked a gruff voice from the other side
"Yes - its late you know" started Kivis - peering through the open crack to try and see who it was who disturbed his work. Through the ajar door he saw a number men - obviously of some military detachment - but hard to distinguish the badges of office through the dim light and the rain now coming down steadily on the visitors
"May we come in ?" asked the man at the door after a moment of unsteady silence
Kivis sighed again, and opened the door further, retreating back into the warmth and safety of his office. Three men walked into his shop - large men, with weapons - though Kivis noted that they were sheathed. As he looked closer at the men shaking the rain off their leather tunics, Kivis immediately recognized the badges of the Overlords Special Forces that the men wore. Indeed this worried the scribe more than the sheathed weapons, and as was his lent, Kivis started imagining the worst of the visiting officials.
