Kivis has second doubts

The early pre-light dawn spread its fingers across the sky, threatening to suddenly set fire to the clouds hovering over Alaghon. Kivis was in a trance, walking through the streets he knew so well back to the Market District and to his safe shop. At least, it was safe yesterday – would it ever be safe again he thought darkly to himself. All the paranoid thoughts that Kivis had previously molded to his psyche now screamed at him, but he no longer seemed to care – or at least no longer had the ability to control his surroundings.

Stepping through the Temple District, Kivis noticed the monks of Tyr tending to their flower garden – straightening those flowers and plants that had suffered through the previous nights storm. The damp streets gave off an aroma that Kivis would always be able to identify – the city streets that had for eons previously been trodden into by mankind over time. Kivis pulled his coat around him and hurried slightly more so towards his shop.

As Kivis rounded a corner near Wall Street – he noticed a couple of dark shadows in the alleyway in front. Quickley Kivis moved his hands into a pocket in his coat, his fingers seeking out an object within.

“Hail kind sir, woulds’t thou have any silver for a poor veteran of the Eastern wars ?” spoke one of the shadows, leering out into the alley in front of Kivis.

“I’m afraid I haven’t” replied Kivis, stopping to ensure enough distance remained between him and the sorry looking gentleman in front. Out of the corner of his eye, Kivis noticed another shadow skulking along the wall to his right.

“Do you have a Beggars license at all ?” questioned Kivis. This obviously staggered the man; he was not expecting such a direct question. “For if you do not, I am sure that the Beggars Guild would be interested in knowing that certain members of the Thieves Guild are fooling around the Tenderloin District impersonating Beggars.” At this, the shadow that was slowly skulking seemed to pause. “Of course, you would understand the penalty for such a precipitation of fallacy”. At this, Kivis made a single step forward to the wretch in front of him, who now was understanding that this “gentleman” might not actually be such easy pickings after all. “Aye, indeed you are right sire” spoke the poorly dressed man, stepping back into the alley, “Why, it might be perspicuous of me to even attempt such maliciousness”. Before his eyes, Kivis watched the two men melt into the shadows, no doubt to attempt the same scam on another traveler who might not be as knowledgeable as he.

Had anyone watched the preceding, they would have noted it strange that Kivis was so knowledgeable concerning the laws of the underworld. They might also have been aware that Kivis was relatively calm throughout the entire affair – strange for the scribe. An even more curious observer would be wondering about what item may lie deep within the scribes’ pocket, which gave the man such power....
